***Packaging Structural Designer***

RESPONSIBILITIES:
Work under the supervision of the Sr. Structural Designer to design corrugated packaging for global production. Design responsibilities will include:

  • Design primary and secondary packaging for consumer product companies.
  • Collaborate with design team to understand production capabilities, limitation, raw materials supply, quoting procedures, production and quoting timelines.
  • Primary responsibility will be in the development of packaging structural design and packaging distribution analysis to support packaging division.
  • Collaborate with accounts development staff in developing packaging solutions.
  • Create all phases of design work.
  • Facilitate the coordination of ordering scheduling and inspecting of all samples required from both internal resources and out-sourced structural service providers.
  • Produce packaging prototypes
  • Create, maintain and post manufacturing specifications to company and customer FTP sites.
  • Perform performance testing of packaging designs.
  • Create duplicate designs for additional sizes or family of designed product.
  • Produce full graphic mock-ups and prototypes for presentation and approval purposes.

SCOPE:
Must be able to maintain high levels of motivation with little supervision. Position requires ability to manage projects efficiently and with thorough follow-up. Ability to handle sensitive information and communicate effectively with many internal and some customer contacts is required. This position must be able to support the development process for account activity. Some travel required.

ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS OF POSITION:
Degree in industrial design or packaging engineering or equivalent work experience. Superior verbal and written communication skills and strong interpersonal skills with an aptitude to work with counterparts who speak English as a Second Language. Intermediate to advanced math skills. The ability to handle multiple projects in a fast paced environment while maintaining accurate records is required. The candidate must have the ability to exercise independent decision-making with outstanding organizational skills and attention to detail. Intermediate computer skills in word processing and advanced spreadsheet skills. Candidate must have a general knowledge of packaging manufacturing and supply chain services.

PREFERRED KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITY:
Must have a working knowledge and skill in Microsoft Word, Excel, Project, PowerPoint software. Must have experience in engineering software ArtiosCAD, Workbench, AEI, AutoCad, Score, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Acrobat, Cape and Truckfill software are a plus.

Position Summary:
This position supports Global Packaging Design and Innovation (GPDI) in the Research and Development (R&D) group in Pleasanton, CA, initiating and completing work to achieve project objectives within the packaging technical function. Focus is on primary packaging, including bottles, triggers, closures, cartons, flexibles, multi-wall bags, thermoforms, and secondary packaging, mostly corrugated cases. Experienced packaging engineer will:

  • Design, test and commercialize packaging systems to meet the needs for all domestic businesses
  • Independently design and execute project work, individually and within teams
  • Work with suppliers and other functions to deliver consumer preferred packages in short timing
  • Analyze and interpret data and information, draw conclusions and recommend next steps to complete assigned projects and leverage new learning
  • Independently identify, select, and apply known and emerging technology to achieve business results within and across business units
  • Communicate effectively with teams and with management to influence decisions or outcomes
  • Improve best practices within technical function
  • Train, mentor, and help onboard new and less experienced staff

Required Qualifications:

  • BS, MS, in Packaging, Chemical or Mechanical Engineering or equivalent experience
  • Demonstrated strong communication and leadership skills

Desired Qualifications:

  • Consumer Products or relevant industry experience
  • Previous packaging experience

Packaging Development Engineer, Forward Technology

Position Summary:
This position supports Global Packaging Design & Innovation (GPDI) across all SBUs in the Pleasanton Forward Technology group, identifying and developing new packaging and dispensing system technologies. Focus is on technologies not commercially available or that need significant assessment / development before being applicable to a commercialization project. Key roles and responsibilities are:

  • Lead the technology discovery phase of packaging intensive projects.
  • Conduct proof of principle of selected technologies.
  • Conduct broad technical feasibility assessment, including other aspects like supply chain, manufacturing, cost drivers, potential IP issues and consumer impact.
  • Drive the creation of a broad exclusionary strategy when applicable.
  • Participate in the creation of partnerships and joint development programs with vendors, universities or other research organizations.

Required Qualifications:

  • BS or MS in Mechanical or Chemical Engineering, or related field.
  • Strong science or engineering foundation in order to quickly learn new technical fields and identify reapplication opportunities from other industries.
  • Hands on. Ability to quickly create and conduct experiments.
  • Strong leadership skills to champion new technologies and product ideas in the middle of significant uncertainty.
  • Good communication skills. Ability to concisely explain technical concepts to non technical functions and Sr. Management.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience in one of the following areas:
  • Thermoplastics and modifiers
  • Thermoplastics molding processes
  • Dispensing systems for fluids like aerosols, disposable pumps, etc.
  • Good strategic and business sense in order to objectively assess potential technologies considering their business impact.
  • Broad knowledge of the packaging industry for CPG companies, including its key players, suppliers and end users.
  • Experience in managing Industrial Design firms.
  • Experience in consumer research programs.
